chihuahua puppy with broken leg...what helps bones heal/strengthen?

Postby dllfb » Thu Sep 10, 2009 9:24 am

I have a 16 week old chihuahua that broke its leg.  It was splinted last week but after xrays today I'm told that his little bone shifted and he must have an operation tomorrow to screw in a metal plate.  I asked the vet what vitamins I could give the dog to help strengthen it's bones and help heal this one.  He said dogs bones aren't like human bones and just to give it a high quality puppy food.  However....I find that hard to believe and would like to give him something to help mend this bone or strengthen his bones.  Can I give him calcium tablets or anything homopathic/naturopathic ???? What dosage for a 2 pound dog???  Any info at this stage would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much for your time.

process dog food usually has calcium added to it, if you feed your dog none processed foods then it may require some sort of supliment... however if your dog broke its leg from an accident then its probably likely suppliments won't be a magical cure as the bone will need to heal itself in the correct position ... which is probably more the angle the vet was taking... if your dog broke its leg from simply walking on it then maybe there was be some call for concern interms of weak bones...... there might not be any harm feeding suppliments if you are feeding it on a none processed diet... however you don't want to over do it as it could lead to toxic problems - which is the main issue with suppliments.... I don't know of the dosages but this would depend on what suppliments you used... I would imagine in the short term your best bet would be let the leg heal in the correct position - this will dictate the function the leg will have in the future....
bones are another good source of calcium aswell... i'm not saying don't use the tablets or increase calcium intake - it might work really well... but don't over do it cause alot of supliments are quite concentrated compared to what it found int nature

Biopet put out a range of natural pet remedies that are available from most pet stores and some vet clinics.  They have one out called Biopet Truma.  Worth while talking further with your vet or another vet that may offer more advise on natural remedies to help with the healing process.

Some natural remedies available for people. Arnica is a highly respected remedy, helping to maintain the body’s own natural restorative functions, while Calendula is well known for its tonic effect on skin, bones, muscles and connective tissue.  These may be available in a pet formula also.  But best to talk with a vet or specialist in this feild. ;)

Here is a conact for a pratice in Nelson you could contact http://www.paw-print.co.nz/ there are a number of others.  ;)

Definately be careful with any supplements you add to your dogs diet most quality dog food have all that they need and you can cause an overdoes that could be harmful.
