Toilet Training your Puppy
Positive reinforcement is the key to successfully teaching your puppy to go to the toilet in the right place. If you want to train your puppy to go to the toilet on newspaper or towel you need to encourage that with phase. If it doesnβt make it to the newspaper donβt get angry as this will only reinforce negative behaviour as well as punishing your dog. They also donβt like used newspaper lying around the place so you need to make sure that used newspaper is picked up and replace straight away. If you want to train your dog to go to the toilet outside you need to predict when it needs to go and take it outside. Eventually they get use to going outside and will tell you they need to go by sitting at the door or getting your attention by whining or nosing you. Often it can be a fun time waking up first thing in the morning and racing your puppy outside before they go to the toilet, but this only last for a short time till they grow larger.
Itβs important that you show your puppy where to go to the toilet. If your puppy starts to go to the toilet you can lift it up and place it on the newspaper or towel and give it phase. Although it can be messy it is a good way to get your puppy use to going in the right place in-case it does need to go inside. It can take around 4 months for your puppy to get full control over there bladders so you need to be patient and donβt punish your dog even when they get older. Itβs all about training, being consistent, making it clear where you puppy should go to the toilet and positive reinforcement.
